Since the pandemic, substance use and deaths by overdose have skyrocketed in El Paso County, Colorado. When adjusting for changes in the size of El Paso County population, the rate of overdose deaths has increased 77 percent over the 10-year period from 2013 to 2022. Much of that increase (53 percent) has occurred since 2019.

Teller County, Colorado, is facing a similar rise in substance use. Teller County, CO has a 30% higher annual opioid death rate in comparison to the state average. And, there is a relative shortage of mental health and behavioral services and staff. In 2021 there was only one mental health provider per 500 people registered in Teller County.
